Dean to Lusaka 2026

The Spirit of Paul McGirr is a registered charity in Northern Ireland that has been operating for over twenty years. The organisation works closely with the community of Chainda in Lusaka, Zambia, helping to create opportunities and spaces that allow people to reach their full potential. Funds raised go towards travel costs, building materials, stationery, and essential medical equipment that directly benefit children and families in Zambia. More information about the charity can be found at: https://www.spiritofpaulmcgirr.org/
Recently, four Post-16 students from Dean Maguirc College – Laura Delaney, Niamh McElduff, Clara Rose Marley, and Ríoghnach McAleer – travelled to Zambia as volunteers, accompanied by their mentors Anthony Marley and Cliodhna Fullen. During their time there, they contributed to important development work within the community.
A key part of their work involved upgrading a rural maternity and health centre. The group helped ensure the facility remained safe, weather-resistant, and fully fit for purpose. Essential roof repairs were carried out, helping to protect the building and maintain a secure environment where women and newborns can continue to receive vital care.
In addition, the students visited a local orphanage caring for around 100 children. They donated food, drinks, hygiene products, and clothing to support the children’s daily needs. The visit was a meaningful opportunity to engage directly with the community and provide practical support where it was most needed.
Beyond the volunteer work, the group also spent time connecting with local community members in the evenings. These moments of cultural exchange allowed them to share stories, learn about daily life in Zambia, and build genuine and lasting connections.
The trip also included unforgettable experiences outside of their volunteer work, including safari excursions and a visit to the Irish Embassy. These moments added to what was already a deeply impactful and life-changing journey for everyone involved.
Thank You
Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the fundraising target for the project was successfully achieved. The Spirit of Paul McGirr charity extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who donated. Every contribution played an important role in making this meaningful mission possible and in supporting the communities in Lusaka.
